Hospital acquired infections have been common place in the news in recent years. Patients admitted to hospital for minor, routine procedures are at risk of being infected and this has, in some cases, been fatal.
MRSA is caused when bacteria enter the body through a break in the skin and multiply. Redness and swelling are generally the first symptoms often followed by boils or abscesses. If the infection enters the blood stream it can cause sepsis.
C Diff is a natural bacterium that lives in the gut. The natural balance of this bacterium can be upset after surgery or antibiotics. If this happens, the bacteria can multiply and release toxins often causing fever and diarrhoea.
Group B streptococcus is a type of bacteria that is the main cause of life-threatening infections in newborn babies but can also, in rare cases, affect adults. This bacteria can live harmlessly within the vaginal or gastrointestinal tracts of healthy women and be passed onto babies either during birth or while the baby is still in the womb. Developing this infection can include; blindness, deafness, cerebral palsy, meningitis or pneumonia.
